Atari Plans to Launch RollerCoaster Tycoon Touch On The Blockchain

Video Game Developer Atari has recently partnered up with Hong Kong-based Animoca Brands to develop blockchain versions of one of their most popular game titles, RollerCoaster Tycoon Touch and Goon Squad.

These newly developed versions have been set to launch sometime during June 2019. Both of them will utilize non-fungible tokens (NFTs) backed by blockchain technology to ensure that tokens are unique and cannot be duplicated.

RollerCoaster Tycoon Touch is a theme park management game that has successfully gained over 19 million downloads worldwide. A spinoff of the RollerCoaster Tycoon game originally developed in 1999 and feature sequels that span multiple platforms, such as PC and Mobile apps.

Goon Squad is a card-based fighting game that is currently available on both iOS and Android systems where users battle mobster to raise their very own criminal empire.

The co-Founder and chairman for Animoca Brands, Yat Siu, who previously began his career working with Atari and utilizing their computers, has stated that these games were made for blockchain.

“The RollerCoaster Tycoon franchise is, like many of Atari’s properties, a true evergreen, having been around for two decades. Given the strategic and commercial elements of this incredibly fun simulation, it is a perfect candidate for blockchain adaptation.”

Our Thoughts

As blockchain continues to consume more infrastructure, from gaming to payment rails and cryptocurrency exchanges, it shows how the technology can be used to optimize networks and platforms around the world, without consumers being completely aware.
